Pilings are one of the most important parts of any marine construction project. Pilings are used to stabilize structures, such as docks, seawalls, and more. Dock pilings provide a foundation for docks/boats and to protect a dock from damage.
Before you undergo your next dock construction project, here are a few things to know about dock pilings.
What is a Dock Piling?
A dock piling is a post that is installed into the ground in order to provide added stability for structures built over water, such as docks. To keep your dock in great condition for years to come and to protect it from damage from outside elements, it is important to construct proper dock pilings.
Different Types of Dock Pilings
Dock pilings can be constructed from numerous materials, all of which serve different purposes; therefore, assessing the best type of material for your project based on your unique needs as a dock owner before undergoing construction is important.
Concrete Piling
The most durable dock pilings are constructed from concrete. When installed correctly and free from damage such as chipping or cracking, concrete pilings can last up to 50 years.
Timber Piling
Timber pilings are a great option for some docks, however, they can only last up to 50% as long as concrete pilings, even when well cared for and correctly maintained with additional equipment and tools such as piling wrap. Timber pilings are a great option for docks in which a boat is expected to rub against a piling, as the wood will not scratch or damage the boat in comparison to concrete.
Pin Pilings
In rare cases, Pin pilings are an option. This is constructed from a metal piling covered by a plastic sleeve filled with concrete. This option is not as durable as others, however, it is a good option for areas that cannot accommodate larger boats and barges, as the pilings can be built by hand and in smaller boats.
Fiberglass Pilings
One of the newest piling materials available on the market is fiberglass. While these pilings are just as strong as their timber and even concrete counterparts, they have not been around long enough to withstand the test of time. It is recommended that those undergoing dock construction stick to traditional materials like concrete and timber until more research can be done to understand how fiberglass pilings hold up over time.
By choosing the right material for your project, you can ensure that your dock pilings keep your dock structurally sound and secure for decades to come.
